Subphylum Mastigophora
Basic Diagrams
Atrial Flagellate:
Trophozoite
Trophozoite
Key:
A) Flagella - whiplike appendages that are the organelles of locomotion for protozoan
flagellates.
B) Nucleus - main, central portion of a parasite; contains genetic material.
C) Axoneme - a portion of the flagellum that is located inside the parasite.
D) Median bodies - also called parabasal bodies; thought to be involved with metabolism.
E) Clear zone - seen on cyst form only; occurs when the cytoplasm retracts away from the cell
wall.
F) Karyosome - a clump of chromatin material found within the nucleus; helpful in
identification.
G) Undulating membrane - a wavy membranous structure attached to the outer portion of the
parasite.
H) Axostyle - rodlike structure consisting of a pair of axonemes; provide structural support.
