Transmission
This parasite is transmitted by the ingestion of food or water containing mature cyst forms. Once the cyst is ingested and excystation has occurred in the lower ileum, trophozoites will multiply in the colon.
Disease
This parasite is considered nonpathogenic. Infections are asymptomatic.
Diagnostic
- Laboratory specimen
- stool (trophozoites and cysts)
- Testing
- permanent slides made with trichrome stain
- the size should be measured carefully to help distinguish it from Entamoeba histolytica
Treatment
No treatment is required.
