Basic Information
The definitive host for this parasite is the rat. The intermediate host are arthropods such as grain beetles and fleas.
Transmission
Transmission occurs when a person ingests an infected beetle or other arthropods, usually in grains or cereals.
Disease
- Most infections are asymptomatic.
- If symptoms do occur, they are mild and include:
- diarrhea, nausea and slight abdominal pain
Diagnostic
Diagnosis is made when eggs (ova) are found in stool specimens.
Treatment
Praziquantel is effective for treatment though niclosamide is recommended.
